From ChatGPT to AI generated art and deep fake videos, Generative AI is poised to impact every industry - including telecom. This lunchtime session focuses on the opportunities, not the challenges of Generative AI, and will introduce a few startups taking us into this new future.
We’ve all been aware that AI will radically change the tech landscape for many years, even decades. But the sudden emergence of Stable Diffusion or Dall-E for creating AI art surprised us. And it was followed by ChatGPT bursting onto the scene, creating intelligent and cogent text content based on whatever you ask it to create. And it’s not just a silly trinket - people immediately began using it to help them produce their paid work. These launches took the notion of AI content from the abstract to the very real. From the future, to the present.
Both DALL-E and ChatGPT come from OpenAI, a Microsoft-backed company with an Open ethos and governed by a non-profit under CEO Sam Altman. The idea of an AI such as OpenAI is that they will build this as a platform, and other people and companies can use the platform to build their intelligent products and solutions.
The notion of AI augmenting the capabilities of talented humans will change the way telecom companies operate:
- The way networks are designed
- OA&M automation
- AI management of SDN
- Troubleshooting and fixing problems independently
- Writing code, such as VNFs
- Sales interactions
- Customer service
- And the ways our customers interact with their phones and devices
The word “disruptive” seems to understate the changes we’re going to see this decade. Now. Microsoft’s Bing plans on using the AI to regain the search market they lost to Google many years ago…and the threat is real. Properly applied AI can flip markets, quickly making new winners and losers, and the telecom industry won’t be an exception.
Of course, OpenAI (backed by MSFT) isn’t the only game in town, they’re just the ones that shocked us awake. The other big tech companies are furiously building competing AI platforms, as well as any number of R&D institutions and even startups (like OpenAI itself.) But it does seem like the big players have an advantage here, because of their massive access to both data, and compute power – the two big building blocks of AI. How can telcos use their mountains of data with AI?
