Innovation Review on 5G RAN

A number of changes are taking place on the Radio Access Network of cellular carriers. Virtualization, Remote Radio Head, Cloud RAN, and Open RAN are some of the biggest changes, but 5G, multiband, and directionality are also adding layers. ComTech Forum meets this month to introduce startups and innovations focused on the next generation of Radio Access Networks

The transition to 5G is placing pressure on (and creating opportunities for) network operators to improve efficiency and introduce new products and services. RAN technologies, whether it's Open RAN, Virtualized RAN, Cloud RAN, Distributed Mobile Edge, antennas, modulation, or slices, the future includes complex multi-vendor environments that will create opportunities for new innovative solutions.

And, hot off of MWC in Barcelona, we’ve seen increasing pressure from Public Cloud vendors like AWS, Google and MSFT to customize their cloud services to be better platforms for telecom cloud, further driving pressure towards open and virtualized solutions.

• all while (in theory) driving down operation costs.

Great! But, to handle the newfound complexity, the RAN will need AI and ML to adjust and accommodate on the fly. Networks will need to sense environmental and application context and react accordingly to improve performance, and in turn, subscriber experience.
