Telecom Council's next Lunch Roundtable will explore the next evolution of communications, as carriers look beyond just providing bandwidth, to developing new revenue-generating services. Join Telecom Council members and the vendors and investors that support innovation across the industry as we look at the opportunity and review relevant startups.
For years, customers have expected telecoms to offer them more, but for the same price - the expectation that, as technology advanced, their quality of experience would track accordingly. But the game shifted sometime after LTE. Once customers can reliably enjoy data speeds as fast as they can consume, audio and video that stream effortlessly with sufficiently low latency to eliminate buffering, those basic needs are fully met.
And so, the next set of services telecoms offer should be differentiated and not in the basic bundle, sold à la carte to whomever needs them, and at a premium price.

Telecom networks are increasingly becoming software-defined, managed by AI, and delivered in 5G and soon 6G air interfaces. These broad platforms allow for a rich and diverse set of uses. No longer limited to “just voice”…or even “just data” our telecom networks can offer a range of differentiated services, such as:
- the obvious higher bandwidth, faster speeds
- the obvious SLAs and higher reliability
- universal coverage from LEOs in space
- low-latency, premium routing
- network slices with user-defined characteristics
- security
- custom up/down ratios
If we look at the model shown by the top 2 handset vendors, they’ve been able to steadily raise their prices over basic models by differentiating key aspects of the hardware that reveal their benefits in the user experience. Better processors enable better speech recognition, AI, and image filters. Better cameras give users better photography, and a versatile sensor. How can the network provide, and charge, for similar upgrades?
Today’s meeting discusses the technical, business, service creation, and apps aspects of offering differentiated services over premium telecom networks.
