An increasingly connected and modern evolution of the world’s electrical infrastructure is underway. With soaring carbon-based energy costs and aging infrastructure, the energy sector is looking to Smart Grid solutions, where bi-directional, high-speed, reliable and secure data communications will transform the industry. Opportunities abound for telcos, startups and cleantech companies.
This month, we are also hosting Cleantech Council members and colleagues to look at the challenges and opportunities for innovation and startups at the intersection of the communications and energy industries.
The term “Smart Grid” first hit Silicon Valley before 2013, with the promise of an IoT grid, intelligently managing energy, demand, and supply. But we didn’t get the revolution we expected at that time. Since then, the many failings of our electrical grids have made news over and over, and not just in the USA.
10 years of progress includes more renewables, more distributed methods of electricity production, and better demand management. Economic incentives of time-of-day pricing spur “smart appliances” that respond to the smart grid. Innovation in energy storage is popping up around arbitrage, peak demand, and smoothing peaks in production. Connected Meters have allowed grid operators to bill electricity based on the time-of-use, yielding more creative billing windows, which effectively manage demand and incentivize consumers to seek Smart Devices, which take advantage of times with lower prices.
Also critical to the Smart Grid is connectivity. As more and more parts of the grid are connected, and also more and more industrial and consumer equipment, the potential for efficiencies start to grow. But what are the technologies for connecting these nodes, and how is the data integrated, stored, analyzed, and utilized in the system? Distributed power demand & supply sounds a lot like Edge Compute in telecoms, so is there a role for EC in the Smart Grid? In our meeting, we’ll discuss the connectivity solutions for Smart Grids, the sensors, the storage, the IIoT, the cloud compute, the Edge. And we’ll look at CleanTech enabling cheaper and cleaner energy production and delivery.

They are 30” round / 42" tall cocktail tables with black linen, power, and Wi-Fi when available, and signed with your logo.
DUAL ACCESS MEETING FORMAT
This meeting is available to attend onsite in Silicon Valley or online in our virtual meeting room. Though Telecom Council meetings are private and not recorded, members can access presentations, agenda, and attendee information in the member library for this and all Telecom Council meetings.
